Upgrading to Digital Phone Lines

The UK’s telephone network is changing
Copper wires and analogue signals have served our nation for over a century. They’ve kept hospitals, schools and emergency services connected, they’ve powered card machines on our high streets and delivered some of most important phone conversations we’ve ever had with our family and friends.

But, because it’s been around for a long time, it’s no longer as efficient as it could be. Replacement parts are hard to come by and, it fails more often than we’d like, meaning it doesn’t provide the world-class service that we need it to. This is why we’ll be retiring the analogue phone network at the end of 2025.

By this point everyone in the UK will have been upgraded to a digital phone line, providing us with a greener, faster, and more reliable service. This means landline voice calls will soon be transmitted digitally – in the same way your broadband works. By modernising the telephone network, we’ll be able to do more than ever before, helping the UK to stay competitive on the global stage.

To enable this change, most people in the UK from big organisations, to small local businesses, data hungry families, to elderly relatives using their landline as a lifeline will need to answer the call and get ready for the Upgrade to Digital Phone Lines.

The future is calling, and it’s time to pick up.

Move your number to Voip

Move your number to Voipfone

It’s free and you could slash your line rental by £20 per month*

Transfer your existing numbers from your old phone company to your Voipfone account.

We can move (port) almost any landline number onto our service, including BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, as well as numbers from other VoIP providers.

It’s fast, free and will save you a lot of money.

*BT line rental at 31.03.2023 is £26.35

I already have a Voipfone account

Log into your Control Panel and navigate to the Porting Requests section under Services, Inbound Numbers.

Click on the “Move my numbers to Voipfone” button to begin a new porting request.

You will need to upload a copy of your telephone bill showing your name, address and the telephone number (so we have proof it belongs to you).

Please take care to complete the forms fully and accurately; the porting process for landline numbers is unfortunately very fussy, and the losing provider will reject your port if it contains errors.

I do not have a Voip account

Sign up for a new account here. During the onboarding process, you will be asked if you want to bring any numbers with you to Voipfone.

Once your account is created, you will receive an email with instructions on how to complete your porting request in your customer Control Panel.

You will need to upload a copy of your telephone bill showing your name, address and the telephone number (so we have proof it belongs to you).

Please take care to complete the forms fully and accurately; the porting process for landline numbers is unfortunately very fussy, and the losing provider will reject your port if it contains errors.

How much does it cost?

There are no charges to move your number to Voipfone.

You can either move your number to a Voip plan – e.g. Voip 100 – and it will become the number included in the plan price, or to Voip Flex where it’s just £3 ex VAT per month and you pay separately for any calls you make.

How long will it take?

Most single number ports take between 7-14 days to complete – but it can be longer depending on the type of line you have and the number of numbers you need to move. There is no loss of service during this period.

Before making your request please check that:

  • The number is still working. Otherwise, we can recover it if service was cancelled less than 31 days ago.
  • You’re happy for any services on the current line/number to end – including any broadband service.
  • If Redcare (a Fire/Intruder Alarm Security Monitoring Service) is on the line this needs to be ceased, and the order completed, before you start the porting process. If you still need it you could move Redcare to a different line.
  • Do not place an order with the current provider to cease or stop the line, as the porting process is designed to do this for you.
